On some nights you can even see the Northern Lights. I have a friend who paid a fortune to fly to Iceland for five nights to see the Northern Lights but didn't see them until she was putting the key into the front door of her home in the Dales!
We have some very large areas completely free of light pollution so the stars are more visible and seem to shine brighter. On a good night you can see around 2000 stars as well as the Milky Way, planets and maybe some meteors. There are even four places that have been designated as 'Dark Sky Discovery Sites' - the Hawes and Malham National Park Centres, Buckden National Park Car Park and Tan Hill Inn. All of these places are open to the public.
We've even got a special Dark Skies Festival which this year will take place from 15th February to 3rd March. This includes an amazing range of events such as star gazing by canoe, pop-up planetariums, bike rides by moonlight, astronomy evenings guided by expert speakers, dark sky photography workshops, a pizza planet party, and moonlit walks.
