Grab some children (your own or those of friends or relatives obviously, not just any children) and head off to Studfold (check opening times) for a magical day out.
Fairies, nature, dens, ride-on tractors, sandpit, stunning views, intriguing surprises along the way, historic barn, meadow and woodland walks, and cake = all the ingredients you need for a day out with young children.
What is Studfold? It's hard to describe because there are so many different elements to it. There's the adventure nature trail, the enchanting Two Stone Wishes fairy village in a hidden dell, go kart and ride-on tractor and play area, bird hide, and camping.
Today's version of Studfold was created by brother and sister, Anne and Ian on their family farm, which has been farmed by the same family for 16 generations! Studfold is suitable for toddlers to 12 year olds, and they've thought carefully about the right activities to engage different ages. For those who aren't intrigued by fairies and pixies, there are dens to build, go-karts to ride.
The nature trail is unlike any version you're likely to have seen elsewhere, with plenty of surprises along the way which cleverly engage children as they learn about nature. Children who say they don't like walking won't notice how far they've gone as they run ahead to find a giant story-telling chair, massive footprint, a nature loom, sensory boxes, huge spiders' web and a 3 metre hedgehog. Pick up a clue sheet at reception.
There's a calm, reflective area in a meadow and a bird hide. The play park is in another area, next to an ancient barn where you can learn more about farming in times gone by, or just sit and watch children play.
Ian and Anne have really thought carefully about their magical story telling wood. The little fairy village is accessed through beautifully carved wooden gates, and then children can discover the story of the woods and scamper around looking for the fairy houses in the trees. Each wooden house has been individually designed conveying the kind of awe and wonder every child should have in their life.
So where is this magical place? It's near Lofthouse in Nidderdale, between Pateley Bridge and Masham. Take a look at their website for more details and for opening times.
