W.R. Mitchell, or Bill Mitchell as he was fondly known, was editor of the iconic Dalesman magazine for over 30 years, and wrote more than 200 books on local history.
He also collected over 600 interviews with Yorkshire Dales people, creating an incredibly rich and fascinating insight into life in the Dales.
In 2012 Settle Stories started to digitise a selection of Bill’s collection of cassette tapes so they're preserved for generations to come.
The interviews included a wide range of farmers, landowners, and others local personalities, and highlight the different accents and dialects once used.
You can now listen to some of them online so make a drink, sit comfortably and listen back in time to find out about the lives of people like Kit Calvert, saviour of Wensleydale Cheese, 'Bill Up t’Steps', historian Marie Hartley, and farmer John from Malhamdale.
