| We’re living in a troubled world. Listen to too many politicians and economists and you’ll quickly get glum. Cast your eyes around city high streets and the view’s not good. So, what’s the answer? Quite simple – turn to art and beauty in the Yorkshire Dales. We can’t bring about world peace (although it is very peaceful here) but we can give you a welcome respite, and make you feel happier. Studies show that art can make you happier, whether you’re creating you own art, or enjoying someone else’s. |
1. Looking at and buying art feels the same as falling in love!
Did you know that the same part of the brain that feels good when you fall in love, is also stimulated when you look at beautiful art? It doesn’t matter what it is – a painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography. If you think it’s beautiful, your brain fills with the feel-good chemical, dopamine, and you feel happier! Don’t believe me? Look up the experiments of London neurobiologist Professor Zeki. It's a great scientific reason for you to spend money on art in your home so you can always look at it. And if that art is inspired by the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, then surely it’s even better for your well-being?
2. Be creative and delay ageing!
There are plenty of places where you can join an art or craft workshop and learn a new skill, or where you can take inspiration from the Yorkshire Dales to write, paint, photograph, make. Studies show that creating art can reduce the stress hormone cortisol, as well as releasing feel-good endorphins. When you’re in the flow of creativity, other worries are less prominent and the sense of achievement is definitely good for the soul. A 2014 study even found that creating something beautiful can delay ageing!
3. Just watch and wonder for a touch of magic
Our final way to enjoy the benefits of creativity in the Yorkshire Dales is even easier – just watch others! There’s something incredibly soothing about watching some-one making something or creating a work of art. When you see an artist or craftsperson start with a blank canvas or a lump of clay and gradually bring to life something that previously only existed in their minds, it’s very uplifting, almost magical. It’s good to see different ways of thinking and doing.
There’s a real joy in creating, in admiring a work of art or just watching a creative person. Now all you need to do is choose where, what and how you want to enjoy creativity in the Yorkshire Dales using our creative directory.
