An insider's view: Stephen Walker, Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
Can you tell us a little about your job and how you came to be doing it?
I am the Business Manager of the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and have been since 1990 prior to that I was a volunteer here since the mid 1970s What aspect of your job and the place where you work makes you feel happiest? I love meeting our passengers and it's great to work in such a fantastic location What do you think visitors gain from being at the railway? They all love the trip back in time, the wonderful sight, smell and sound of a working steam engine and the fantastic scenery which surrounds us If some one is feeling a little down and perhaps in need of a boost, where in the Yorkshire Dales do you suggest they should visit? Bolton Abbey has such a magical setting and there is so much to explore on the Bolton Abbey Estate If a visitor was coming here for two days what would you recommend they should try to do? Any particular places to eat or drink you'd like to recommend? Obviously they should start by taking a trip on our railway! That should be followed by a visit to Skipton Castle, Malham Cove and Aysgarth Falls I like to eat at the Red Lion at Burnsall, The Wellington Inn at Darley and the Consiton Hotel |
Is there somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales where you feel sudden swooping joy?
The drive to work from Addingham when I see the Highland Cattle Is there a happy detail in everyday life that many of us miss? A happy dog running loose in a field, under control of course Where's your favourite place to just sit and look? By the reservoirs at Blubberhouses, Swinsty or West End More Yorkshire Dales insider views |
